How does Envirohub work?

Envirohub is a modular water treatment system that can be configured in a variety of ways. Here are a couple of examples of how the system can be set up to manage water on site. Example 1 shows you how contaminated site water is pumped into the treatment tank where flocculant and coagulant are automatically added. Once the water has been pH neutralised, it is then pumped into the Lamella Settlement Tank where solids and liquids are separated. Clean water is then discharged inline with your environmental permit. Example 2 explains how concrete wash water can be filtered and neutralised using the Concrete Washout and CO2 Treatment Tank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Useful information about water management on construction sites

Who regulates the discharge of water from construction sites?

Under UK legislation, it is an offence to discharge polluting substances into controlled waters without prior approval from the Environment Agency (England and Wales) or Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Scotland). These regulators have considerable powers to prosecute companies that fail to adequately control environmentally harmful materials and processes under the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010 and the Water Resources Act 1991. Read more.

Do I need a permit for discharging water from site?

The Environment Agency's Guides titled "Discharges to surface water and groundwater: environmental permits" and "Temporary Dewatering from Excavations to Surface Water" explain when you do and do not need an environmental permit to discharge water to surface water or the ground.

As per the guidance; "You usually need an environmental permit if you discharge liquid or wastewater into surface water".

What is the difference between a standard settlement tank and a lamella settlement tank?

Standard settlement tanks rely on silt sediment slowly settling on the base of the tank over time, whereas Lamella Settlement Tanks use a series of inclined plates with a larger effective settling area to increase the speed of separation. Flocculants can be added to the lamella tank to aid the process further. In summary, Lamella Settlement Tanks will separate your solids and liquids faster!

What is a Concrete Washout?

A Concrete Washout is designed to capture and treat water that has been contaminated by cement-based products on site. Water that has been in contact with cement-based products becomes highly alkaline and corrosive, and so we must bring the pH down before the water can be discharged.

What is Flocculant and Coagulant?

Flocculants and Coagulants are treatment chemicals used in industrial and waste water treatment processes for solids removal, water clarification, precipitation, pH control and dewatering.

Coagulants are used to neutralize the negative electrical charge on particles (colloids), which destabilizes the forces keeping the particles apart. Flocculants, gather the destabilized particles together, causing them to agglomerate and settle out of solution.

In some applications, CO2 can be used to neutralise alkaline waters to reach a desired pH for an optimum reaction with the coagulant and flocculant.

What is the purpose of a Ground Investigation Report?

Ground investigation reports will help you understand the previous use of the land, potential contamination, ground conditions, existing drainage, the presence of water courses etc. so that you can establish a safe and robust water management plan.

What is Dewatering?

Dewatering refers to the process of removing groundwater or surface water from site before construction begins.

EnviroHub kits consisting of settlement tanks, pH treatment and chemical dosing units are a popular choice for contractors and are frequently used as construction and ground dewatering systems.
